The technology:
How did the ABARTH Radiale engine first get into an ABARTH Coupé based on the FIAT 850?
The answer is that the radiale engine was initially developed for this coupé as a rotation left engine, not with a high compression and even suitable for road use. In 1966/67, ABARTH wanted to shake up American racing series up to 1000 ccm with the 1000 OTR. Nothing came of it, because the 1000 OTR was not homologated in the USA due to its expected dominance. So the extremely high-compression ABARTH 1000 OTSS coupé was used.
From 1968, the radial technology was used in the rotation right engines of the ABARTH 850/1000 TCR with outputs of up to 115 hp in 1973.
Only around 100 vehicles of the 1000 OT type were built as a sedan, coupé and spider. The 1000 OTS & 1000 OTSS version was only available as a coupé, the 1000 OTR version as a coupé, spider and also as a Bertone Racer Coupé. These approximately 100 vehicles built also include the ABARTH 1300/124 and ABARTH 1324 models of the 1st and 2nd versions with the FIAT 124 engine, as well as the 1600 OT and the 2000 OT with the Bialbero engine.
There are still 11 vehicles of the 1000 OTR Coupé listed worldwide today, three of which have the genuine Radiale ABA 200 engine. This vehicle is one of them.
The history:
This ABARTH 1000 OTR Coupé was delivered new in the USA to Albert Harper/Atlanta in 1967. She stayed with him for more than 20 years and came to Germany via Italy, Great Britain and Switzerland. In our collection since 2024.
